Case Study 2: Mexico-copper / iron ore project

SCR & ISG: Redefining Bulk Exports Across Mexico

Client Background

SCR was established in 1988 in Mexico City, providing specialised services to the port industry. Over the years, the company expanded its footprint across Latin America, with operations in Panamá, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Colombia, Honduras, and the Bahamas. Recognised for reliability and quality, SCR has built a strong reputation as a leading logistics and port services provider in the region.

Challenges Faced

Mexico’s growing bulk export market required more efficient, scalable, and environmentally responsible solutions for handling large volumes of commodities. Traditional bulk handling methods often caused bottlenecks, dust emissions, and inefficiencies at ports such as Manzanillo, one of the country’s busiest hubs. SCR needed a modern system to streamline operations, reduce turnaround times, and meet international handling standards.

Solutions Provided

In 2016, SCR partnered with ISG as the exclusive Mexican agents for the Containerised Bulk Handling (CBH) system. This innovative system provided a dust-free, container-based solution for loading and unloading commodities.

  • 2017: CBH operations were launched at TIMSA Port in Manzanillo using two tipplers and 140 containers.
  • 2019: Two additional tipplers and 200 more containers were added to increase capacity.
  • The system was deployed to handle high-demand bulk products including iron ore, copper, clinker, lead, and iron pellets.

Results Achieved

The implementation of the CBH system delivered measurable success:

  • 600,000 tons loaded within the first six months of operations.
  • By February 2019, over 2.4 million tons had been loaded using the CBH system.
  • A scalable and flexible solution was established, enabling future growth while reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency.
  • Positioned SCR as a regional leader in containerised bulk logistics.

Client Testimonial

“To say that 30 years have been completed as a teamwork is easy, but to remain in such competitive environment as leaders in the field is a feat. Without the professional and loyal staff in SCR, it would be impossible to get where we are.”
Israel Antonio Alvarado Magallon, Managing Director, SCR
